Mr. Barsamian is a kinetic artist whose work, when seen in person, is so jarring that one can begin to question the laws of physics that we have known as truth since very early in life. He is an animator whose work is not confined to a screen, but exists in the real world, in all three dimension where you can stand right next to it (But don’t touch).

“In a darkened room I present sequentially formed sculptures on a rapidly spinning armature. A synchronized strobe light supplies the illumination. The image exists in real time and viewers are able to share the same space with them. The conflict between sensory information and logic recreates the state of dream reality. The scientific basis for the visual illusion is called the persistence of motion.”

His sculptures are built around a spinning, circular armature, and progress in a sequence very much as film frames do. They are presented in a dark room, with a strobe light, synchronized with the spinning armature as the only light source. So, when one stumbles unknowingly into a dark, flashing room, instead of seeing an armature spinning with 24 sculpted heads attached to 24 subsequent spindles, they see 24 stationary heads screaming, contorting, and exploding, then reforming themselves only to complete the cycle over and over again.

The illusion is so immersive, so believable, that it is truly like walking into a different dimension.

If you ever have a chance to see one of his sculptures in real life, do not pass up the opportunity. It is an unforgettable
experience.
