Director at BENT Image Lab, Daniel Garcia, is a man of many talents, ranging from computer animation, graphic design, and as being one of today’s most interesting music video directors.
Over the years, Garcia has directed videos for such bands as Mates of State, The Go! Team, and TV on the Radio, whose video for “Me-I” won the award for Best Music Video at the 2008 SXSW Festival. Previous videos also received recognition, including Madvillain’s “Monkey Suite,” which was nominated for an MTV Woodie in 2007, and J Dilla’s “Nothing Like This,” which played at the Animation Block Party and Pictoplasma, and was nominated for an award at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
Many of his videos have found homes in some very interesting compilations, such as Stones Throw’s Chrome Children Vol. 1, and Adult Swim’s Warm and Scratchy. In the following article, Motionographer praises Garcia for his conceptual and stylistic approach to the music video form, and the balance he creates between narrative and aesthetics.
